Our History

A Promise Kept

St. Josephine Bakhita Girls' Secondary School began not with a building, but with a promise. Between 2004 and 2010, the community of Nyalieng'a — together with the Catholic Diocese of Homa-Bay — came together to give the region's most vulnerable girls a place to belong: those orphaned, and those pushed out of school by poverty, early marriage, or teenage pregnancy. Named after the Sudanese saint Josephine Bakhita, whose name means "Fortunate," the school opened its doors on 6th May 2011 with 25 students. It has since grown into one of the leading girls' institutions in Rangwe Sub-county.

Key Milestones

2004–2010|A Community Mobilizes

Parents, church leaders, and the Catholic Diocese of Homa-Bay raised funds through donations and local fundraisers. By the end of 2010, the school's first tuition and office block was complete.

2011|Official Registration & Opening

The Ministry of Education registered the school on 7th January 2011. Founding principal Mrs. Jane A. Joseph was posted the same month, and the school officially opened on 6th May 2011 with 25 students. A fundraiser that year built the first dormitory, St. Michael.

2013–2014|Dormitories, Dining Hall & a New Status

A second dormitory, St. Gabriel, and a large dining hall were built with support from visiting German university students, alongside a twin laboratory block funded by a 2013 fundraiser. At its 2014 inspection, the school was upgraded to a 3-stream county boarding school.

2015|Classrooms Through the CDF

A four-classroom tuition block was constructed with support from the Rangwe Constituency Development Fund, easing pressure from the school's fast-growing enrollment.

2016|Built From Savings

Using funds saved by the school itself, a twin staff house for the principal and deputy principal was constructed. The county government also helped drill a borehole on site.

2017|Water & Transport

The school piped its own water supply using savings, and acquired a 51-seater school bus — both funded without external donors.

Today|535 Students and Growing

From 25 students in 2011 to 535 today, the school is now the top girls' school in Kochia Ward and 5th-best in Rangwe Sub-county, having presented KCSE candidates for four consecutive years.

Built by Its Community

No single donor built this school. Parents and church leaders raised the first tuition block from 2004–2010; German university students funded the dining hall and second dormitory; the Rangwe CDF funded a classroom block; and the borehole, water piping, and school bus were all paid for out of the school's own savings.

Looking Forward

Now the top girls' school in Kochia Ward and 5th-best in Rangwe Sub-county, we continue to grow — in academics, in co-curricular activities, and in the facilities our students deserve.
